'Mugger' killed in city 'gunfight'

An alleged mugger was killed in a 'gunfight' between his cohorts and members of Detective Branch (DB) of police at the capital's Ramna Park early Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of DB conducted a drive near inside the Ramna Park around 3:30am.

Sensing their presence, a gang of muggers opened fire on police, forcing the law enforcers to fire back, said Mashiur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station.

One of the muggers was hit by bullets during the gunfight while the rest managed to flee the scene, the OC said.

The injured mugger, whose identity could not be known immediately, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, he said.
