A man was arrested with 294 gold chains weighing over one kilogram and 88,412 Malaysian Ringgit at Shahjalal International Airport in the capital Saturday night.
Arrestee Golam Rabbani, 39, a resident of Muradnagar upazila in Comilla returned from Malaysia by a Singapore Airlines flight with a stopover in Singapore.
Motazzer Hossain, assistant superintendent of police of Airport Armed Police Battalion (APBn), confirmed it to The Daily Star.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of APBn arrested Rabbani when he was passing through the immigration around 11:00pm, the APBn official said.
The arrestee took the 294 gold chains in his shoe when he was traveling. The market price of chains are worth about Tk47,50,000, the police official said.
Earlier Rabbani often carried electronic equipment from abroad without paying any tax, the police official added quoting Rabbani.
