Making the Best of Summer
Summer is the best time to get your gear on and tackle life with full-speed. The time to sit back and relax is over. Sometimes, spending your whole day doing classes and then going back home seems a little too less to spend your day with. Life starts becoming monotonous. To start over fresh, it's best to involve yourself in something new and that is where internships come in. There are many companies around Dhaka city that offer internships to new graduates, graduated students, A Level students and more. While some may want to do an internship in the creative field, others want to get into a more professional sector.
NGO's are great places to consider doing internships in. According to their official website, every year, BRAC receives many requests and applications from interested candidates who want to work as interns and volunteers within the organisation and learn from its activities and approaches. The objective of BRAC's internship and volunteering programme is to offer a chance to gain exposure to the operations of various BRAC programmes to local and international people. The objectives that BRAC strongly holds for its internship programme are to assign interns from diverse academic backgrounds to various BRAC programmes where their knowledge of development issues and other experiences can be enhanced through practical assignments and field exposures.

Aasha Mehreen Amin, Editor, Star Weekend Magazine, The Daily Star, says, “We usually offer internships during the summer. We get applicants who are university students mostly, and we usually prefer taking in students who are at least above the age of 18. But sometimes we bend the rules when schools approach us with A Level or High School students.” The work is neatly cut out for different interns of different ages. But, in any case, they all have to get a good experience in every department, so they prefer all the interns always attend the weekly meetings and get some experience in writing, lay-out, photo shoots and more.
Aronno Haque, an undergraduate student of Wabash College, Indiana, USA, is doing a summer internship here in the city's EMK Center as a programme intern. “Even though my internship does not have much to do with the subjects I'm majoring in, Economics and English. I want to work in an NGO of some sort, and EMK is really helping me build up my professional skills. I have to do a lot of press work, deal with events, and PR and more. This internship is helping me gain both experience and exposure. But here in EMK, school grades do not matter as much as working skills do. Your skills in decision making and usage of creative freedom will matter more.”
But there are some companies and agencies who want to take in more mature people as interns. Grey Dhaka, a multi-national advertising agency, prefers taking in fresh graduates more often than not, but they are open to taking in interns all throughout the year. They have jobs for interns in multiple departments like creative, marketing services, media department and client servicing.
Prothom Alo, like Grey, also has their internship opportunities available all year around. They have internships in different departments like News, Marketing, HR, Administration and Accounts. Prothom Alo usually accepts reference based applications from students who can provide them with university grades, transcripts and university offer letter. But finishing your bachelor's will not be necessary.
This summer, there is no reason to start your monotonous life all over again. Start an internship and expand your knowledge, experience and prepare yourself for the real world!
