Maintain water quality in treatment plants: Moyeen
Science and ICT Minister Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan yesterday urged the engineers to dedicate their efforts to maintaining water quality in the urban treatments plants, bottling plants and beverage industries.
"The quality of water determines quality of life in both urban and rural communities," he said.
The minister was addressing the inaugural session of the 4th Annual General Meeting of the Bangladesh Society of Mechanical Engineers (BSME) at BUET auditorium in the city.
The session was also addressed by Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University of Technology (IUT) and President of BSME Prof Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossain, Vice-President (administration) of BSME Mohammad Shahiduzzaman MP, Secretary General of BSME Prof. Dr A K M Sadrul Islam and Acting Vice-Chancellor of BUET Prof. Dr M A Halim.
Dr Moyeen Khan said the water quality issue should be taken very seriously as many industries discharge toxic waste directly into the rivers. In different parts of the country, people use river water for irrigation and other purposes without knowing the level of contamination, he added.
The minister said the engineers should equip themselves with latest technological innovations in their respective fields and they should try to incorporate new innovation keeping resource constraints in mind.
He urged them to develop sustainable solutions in the fields like 'water treatment' and 'information technology.'
Dr Moyeen Khan said the country now considers pure drinking water a costly resource as it is battling against deadly poison like arsenic.
The BSME later organised technical sessions on industrial water treatment technology. Vice-Chancellor of IUT Prof Dr Mohammad Anwar Hossain presided over the working sessions.
