Safety of our banks

Yesterday, this paper reported a story on a bank robbery of a branch of Premier Bank in Badda. The chilling story recounted how the robber looted the bank of Tk 23 lakh at gunpoint. Shockingly enough, the security guards were not carrying any firearms, and to make matters worse, the robber stole the CCTV recorder and fled with the money. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

This is not the first time that bank branches or ATM booths have been targeted by robbers but the latest incident goes to show that the state of security of many banks in the capital is questionable. It is baffling as to how “security” guards of a bank can be on duty with no firearms in possession. One can only hope that the robber is apprehended at the earliest and that banks all over the country take necessary precautions.
