Left parties call off May 2 hartal
Left parties have withdrawn their May 2 countrywide shutdown as the BNP-led 18-party alliance has called hartal for the same day protesting the deaths in Savar building collapse.
Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) and Ganatantrik Bam Morcha on Sunday called off the hartal a day after announcing the programme on the same issue.
The left parties came up with the decision apprehending that the alliance activists may carry out violence centring the hartal and shift the blame on them.
In a press release on Sunday afternoon, CPB adviser Munjurul Ahsan Khan announced their new decision.
On Wednesday morning, Rana Plaza in Savar came crashing down on around 3,000 garment workers, a day after some cracks developed on a few pillars and floors.
So far, 369 bodies have been recovered from the rubble.
