LDF to protest globalisation in city tomorrow

Left Democratic Front (LDF), an alliance of left-leaning parties, will demonstrate in the city tomorrow to drum up support for its campaign against the adverse effects of globalisation.

The alliance announced the programme at a press conference yesterday, ahead of the three-day ministerial meeting of developing nations scheduled to begin in Dhaka from May 31.

It also called upon all concerned to attend the demonstration programme at Muktangon tomorrow afternoon and raise voice against "capitalists' repression".

"Due to trade-imbalance, national sovereignty is about to go," said Tafazzal Hossain, a leader of the front, portraying the bad effects of the west-prescribed free trade agreements.

He said the left front wants the developing countries committed firmly to protect their interest in the Cancun summit in Mexico. And its ground should be prepared at this ministerial meting, he added.

He called upon the representatives of the developing countries to give up subservient strategy towards the capitalist world and stand by the united decisions of the Third World.

The left parties also feel that the people should know what's happening in the Dhaka meeting and the government should make its position clear to the people in this regard.

Left leaders Nirmal Sen, Rashed Khan Menon and MM Akash attended the press conference.
