Law needed to ensure right to food security
Though Bangladesh achieved self-sufficiency in food, a law must be introduced to ensure people's right to food security, said Law Commission Chairman-in-Charge Prof M Shah Alam yesterday.
“Despite self-sufficiency, it cannot be claimed that all citizens are getting enough to eat although they are constitutionally and as per the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provided a right to food.
“A law for the right to food security will uphold citizens' right to food by making sure that there is always enough food and that he or she is provided for,” he told a seminar, “Environment and Food Sustainability”.
Experts at the seminar organised by Poribesh Bachao Andolan in the capital's Jatiya Press Club stated that food security also included cultivating more land and less crops like tobacco and enhancing food quality.
