Khaleda to address rally August 19
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia is set to address at a mass rally in the city on August 19 where the opposition leader is likely to deliver her directives on latest political scenario including the one on holding of the next parliamentary polls.
“She is scheduled to address at the founding anniversary meeting of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal at city’s Suhrawardy Uddyan,” Shimul Biswas, personal assistant of the BNP chief told The Daily Star on Wednesday.
On May 4, the BNP chief last addressed at a mass rally at city’s Shapla Chattar in which she issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the government to meet the opposition’s demand for restoration of a caretaker government.
Otherwise, she directed opposition leaders and activists to get ready to take to the street no matter the government gives permission or not -- the ultimatum however was ignored by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
After May 5 night mayhem of Hefajat men at the Shapla Chattar, the government imposed unofficial ban on holding any rally in the capital.
The BNP chief was set to address in a BNP rally on May. But the government denied the main opposition to give permission to hold rally the rally in front of the BNP central office at Nayapaltan or at Paltan Maidan.
The government however gave permission to BNP to hold a rally on June 12 at the Suhrawardy Uddyan. The BNP chief did not deliver speech in that rally.
Party sources said Khaleda Zia might shed light on how she will run government if her party comes in power in the next general election.
“It is also natural that the BNP chief will also speak on the latest political development and her party’s stance on holding of the next parliamentary polls,” said a BNP leader.
