JU teachers go on fresh work abstention
Only the scheduled final exams and few classes were held at Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday, as a section of teachers started a three-day fresh work abstention demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain.
The teachers under the banner "Shadharon Shikkhak Forum" resumed their protest following a month of postponement, which came after the education ministry assured them of investigating their 18-point allegation against Prof Anwar.
Prof Hanif Ali, convener to the forum, said, “The probe body was supposed to submit their findings on September 24, and we suspended our demonstration twice upon request from the ministry but the body is yet to inform us of any development”.
He warned that if the VC was not removed by tomorrow, they would start tougher movement from Tuesday.
University Grants Commission (UGC) member M Muhibur Rahman, member of the two-member investigation team, said, “We've taken some more working days to complete our task, and we hope to submit it to the education ministry by Monday”.
An investigation team, upon directions from JU Chancellor and President Abdul Hamid, was formed on September 2 to recommend an acceptable solution.
The teachers launched a movement on April 14 demanding the VC's removal for not expelling a Bangladesh Chhatra League leader, who allegedly assaulted a teacher earlier.
The other allegations include anomalies in teachers' recruitment and admission processes, making unwelcome comments about teachers, and misusing funds.
