JU suspends BCL leader for assault on teacher
General secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jahangirnagar University unit has been suspended for three months from the university on charge of physically assaulting a JU teacher.
The decision, made on the basis of JU disciplinary committee's recommendation, came in an emergency syndicate meeting held yesterday.
On April 6, some BCL activists had an alteration with some teachers as they [teachers] tried to quell an untoward situation in front of the campus during a hartal.
During the altercation, Rajib Ahmed Rasel, general secretary of BCL, JU unit allegedly assaulted Nurul Haque, teacher of economics department and also a JU syndicate member.
Since the alleged assault, JU Teachers Association (Juta) has been demonstrating on the campus demanding punishment for Rasel. The association also demanded Vice Chancellor Prof Anwar Hossain's resignation as he had said he would suspend Rasel immediately but did not keep his word.
Ajit Kumar Majumder, president of Juta, said they will take the next course of action in Juta's next general meeting.
