Jewel, Bappi on 3-day remand
Alleged drug dealer Shafiqul Islam Jewel and his accomplice Somnath Saha Bappi, arrested in connection with the murder of model and actor Tania Mahbub Tinni, were yesterday placed on a three-day remand.
Jewel and Bappi were shown arrested in the murder case on December 24 and 30 respectively on the plea of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) arrested the two at Gulshan in the city on December 18 and seized a huge amount of narcotics from them.
Later, during interrogation, Jewel admitted to having worked for long Golam Faruq Ovi, the former Jatiya Party lawmaker who is the prime suspect in the case.
Jewel and Bappi were yesterday produced before the First Class Magistrate's Court, with a plea for a seven-day remand.
The defence lawyers, Masud Ahmed Talukder and Touhidul Islam Gazi, meanwhile, submitted moved a petition for bail and cancellation of remand.
Neither Jewel nor Bappi was named in the first information report (FIR) on Tinni's murder and police implicated them in the case just to harass them, they argued.
After hearing both sides, Magistrate Mehedi Hasan rejected the bail petition and placed each on a three-day remand.
In another development, the District and Session Judge's Court will hear the bail petition for Tinni's husband Shafkat Hossain Piyal on January 7.
