Jamaat seeks stay on HC verdict
The Supreme Court chamber judge on Thursday refused to hear a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami seeking stay on the High Court verdict that declared the party’s registration illegal.
The HC earlier in the day declared illegal the registration of Jamaat with the Election Commission as a political party.
Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain told the Jamaat lawyers that he would not hear the petition on Thursday, since it was brought before him after the end of the court’s proceedings of the day.
He advised them to move the petition before the chamber judge any other day.
The petition was moved immediately after the HC delivered the verdict around 2:40pm.
A section of Jamaat lawyers led by Abdur Razzaq approached Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain at his chamber with the petition for its hearing around 3:00pm.
Tajul Islam, a lawyer for Jamaat, told The Daily Star that they will move the stay petition at a convenient time later.
