Jamaat men snatch leader injuring 5 policemen
Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami snatched an arrested leader of the party from law enforcers after injuring policemen, including an assistant superintendent of police (ASP), in Kaliganj upazila on Tuesday.
Four other policemen were also injured at that time.
ASP M Tajul Islam of Kaliganj circle said, a police team, led by himself, raided Bhadrajhali village in the upazila and arrested Jamaat leader Sirajul Islam, an accused in a case filed with Kaliganj police station on charge of Jamaat-Shibir violence.
As the news of his (Sirajul's) arrest spread, a huge number of Jamaat-Shibir activists rushed to the scene and encircled the police team and blocked the road placing logs in the area in the evening.
The Jamaat men also threw brick chips at the law enforcers and at one stage, snatched Sirajul away from the police team.
They also attacked and vandalised the covered van of the police team leaving five policemen, including ASP M Tajul Islam, injured.
On information, a team of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) rushed in and rescued the policemen.
Later, police detained Shibir activist Tohidul Islam, also son of Sirajul Islam from the area.
Confirming the incident, superintendent of police in Satkhira district Mollah M Jahangir Hossain said, a case was filed on charge of attacking law enforcers and police were trying to arrest the accused.
