Jamaat man, boy killed in gunfight with cops in Rajshahi

A Jamaat-e-Islami activist and a young boy were killed and five bullet-hit in a gunfight between Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir men and police in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi during the countrywide 48-hour hartal.

Mojahid Hossain, 45, an activist of Jamaat, and Rafiqul Islam, 12, died on the spot, reports our Rajshahi correspondent quoting Wahidul Islam, officer-in-charge of Godagari Police Station.

The local administration slapped section 144 in the upazila since 10:00am, said SM Tuhinur Alam, upazila nirbahi officer of Godagari.

The OC said the clash erupted when around 500 Jamaat-Shibir men equipped with sticks chased law enforcers in Godagari upazila headquarters around 9:00am.

The activists fired gunshot and blasted several cocktails targeting the law enforcers. In reply, police also opened fire and shot 100 hundred rubber bullets to disperse the marauding activists, he said.

Of the injured, four Jamaat-Shibir activists were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital while another to the local upazila health complex, the OC said.
