Paul Schrader wrote the all-time classic film “Taxi Driver” at the age of 26, when he was destitute and in a particular low of his life -- in five days. It is rumoured he had a loaded gun by his desk for “inspiration and motivation”. The Martin Scorsese film starring Robert De Niro and Jodie Foster went on to win the Palme d'Or at the 1976 Cannes, got four Oscar nods and won three BAFTAs.
