N'ganj Theft Case

Human chain demands release of Priyo

Locals and students of Government Tolaram College yesterday formed a human chain in front of Narayanganj Press Club demanding immediate release of Al Fesani alias Priyo, a college student detained in a theft case in the city.
They also demanded trial of the police who detained Priyo, a second year student, on Friday in the "false" case.
Priyo's cousin Nipa filed the case with Fatullah Model Police Station accusing unnamed persons, saying some gold ornaments had been stolen from their Rasulbagh residence recently.
On Sunday, a Narayanganj court sent Priyo to jail rejecting a remand prayer.
Priyo's mother Hasina Khatun alleged Nipa's husband Abdul Hannan threatened them to implicate her two other sons in the case and grab their house, adding that she felt insecure.
Hannan could not be contacted for comments.
Officer-in-Charge Akther Hossain said they were informed of the protest, adding that they would look into it.
Sub-inspector Wahiduzzaman said although Priyo's name was not mentioned in the case, he was arrested as a suspect, adding the plaintiff verbally mentioned his name over previous enmity.
Meanwhile, Priyo's family members claimed that SI Wahiduzzaman had demanded Tk 20,000 from them for Priyo's release. They had already paid Tk 17,000, they said.
However, Wahiduzzaman denied the allegation.
