Human chain against hartal by TOAB
On 30 March 2013, the Tour Operators Association of Bangladesh (TOAB) formed a human chain at Topkhana against the ongoing continuous hartals and strikes. If my memory does not betray, this is for the first time that people in he tourism industry have come out on the street in an organised way to ventilate their angers. TOAB as well as other tourism related businessmen (resort owners, hoteliers, transport owners, etc.) have incurred a huge loss this year due to series of hartals enforced by the opposition, which has forced them to come out to the street. They distributed leaflets with a call to save the tourism industry and raised as many as 9 demands to be fulfilled. I found all the demands very logical.
Tourism is a sophisticated and very sensitive business. It is a different kind of export-oriented business in which customers buy services to go to visit a place of interest. Tourism sector has just started to develop in Bangladesh. But continuous hartals are affecting this sector badly. Can't the government and the opposition come to an understanding so that the opposition stops enforcing hartal anymore.
