HC halts Purbachal housing project activities in Gazipur
The High Court on Thursday directed the authorities concerned to stop activities of Purbachal housing project at Borakau and Parabath areas in Gazipur until further order.
In response to a petition, the court issued a rule upon the government and the housing project authorities to explain in four weeks why the activities of the project should not be declared illegal.
An HC bench of Justice Mirza Hossain Haider and Justice Md Khurshid Alam Sarkar came up with the rule and order after hearing a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela).
The organisation filed the writ petition on Wednesday saying that the Purbachal housing project has no environment clearance certificate for earth filling and constructing structure in Borakau and Parabath areas.
The petitioner prayed to the court to direct the government to stop the activities of the housing project and declare the project illegal.
Iqbal Kabir Lytton, a counsel for Bela, told The Daily Star that the project authorities have been filling earth and constructing structures on around 1600 acres of land illegally since 2010 as it has not collected environment clearance certificate from the Department of Environment.
