HC clears way for Gazipur mayor aspirant
The High Court has cleared the way for Nazimuddin Ahmed, a mayor candidate of Sachetan Nagorik Parishad, to contest the Gazipur City Corporation elections.
Staying an Election Commission's decision of disqualifying Nazimuddin, the court directed it to allow him to run in the maiden polls to the newly formed city corporation slated for July 6.
The HC bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Nazimuddin challenging the EC decision to cancel his candidacy.
The returning officer of Gazipur on June 9 cancelled the nomination paper of Nazimuddin on a loan defaulting allegation.
The mayor aspirant filed an appeal to the EC challenging the returning officer's decision.
On June 14, the EC rejected his appeal and upheld the decision of the returning officer.
Nazimuddin on Tuesday filed the writ petition with the HC saying that he is not any loan defaulter and the EC authorities have cancelled his nomination unlawfully.
