Govt waging war against people
BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday alleged that the government has declared a war against people by continuing “mass killing” across the country.
“People are being killed in firing by law enforcers like birds. Police and Rab members opened fire on people in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj on Friday in the name of nabbing criminals and killed five people. The government has apparently declared a war against people,” he told a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters.
Without any provocation, police first opened fire on people in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj and then people built up resistance, mentioned the BNP leader.
BNP-led 18-party alliance will announce its next course of agitation programme after a meeting of the alliance leaders tonight.
Expressing anger over the aggressive attitude of the law enforcers, Fakhrul said a volatile situation has been prevailing in the country. “The government in a planned way is pushing the country towards anarchy…. They're filing thousands of false cases against opposition leaders and activities.”
He came down heavily on Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir for his remarks that police will not sit idle if people are killed in front of them. “His [home minister] remarks are nothing but a mockery. Stop such killing and start judicial probe into the incidents and find out the culprits.”
“The way the government is oppressing people, it seems they have taken a scorched earth policy. The present situation has defeated the days of darkness of the mediaeval age. Now Bangladesh has become a death valley,” added Fakhrul.
Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has convened a meeting of the 18-party alliance tonight to finalise the alliance's next course of agitation programme to force the government to release BNP leaders and activists arrested from its Nayapaltan central office on March 11 and mount pressure on the government either to restore caretaker government or quit.
