Govt fails to save Hindus
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman Prof Mizanur Rahman at a discussion in the capital yesterday came down heavily on the government for its failure to stop attacks on religious minorities.
The government must answer why the people of religious minorities were living in utter insecurity in Bangladesh, he said.
"The state must come forward immediately to save us from the insecurity," he added.
He also called upon the people to be united to and put an end to murders and destruction of state assets.
"An anti-discrimination law ensuring equal rights for all is necessary to unite the people," said Prof Rahman.
He was speaking at the discussion titled "National Constitution on Equal Opportunities for all: Towards an Anti-Discrimination Legislation", organised by NHRC at Cirdap auditorium in the capital.
NHRC and Law Commission prepared a draft of anti-discrimination law and discussed its possible provisions with stakeholders representing different minority communities.
Barrister Sara Hossain suggested that enacting a single law to protect the rights of different groups may not be very effective. She pointed out that people of religious and sexual minorities, dalits, and people who have physical and mental disabilities do not face the same kind of oppression in the society.
Sex workers demanded that the law should ensures recognition of their profession. "What saddens us most is that our children cannot go to school. In the absence of education our boys become drug addicts and girls sex workers," said a sex worker.
