Gazipur RMG workers block highway
Workers of a garment factory Monday morning staged rowdy protests on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur demanding attendance bonus hike and introduction of lunch bill.
A clash between police and workers of Uni Gears garment factory took place at Board Bazaar that halted the vehicular movements on the highway for around one hour, reports our Gazipur correspondent.
The workers started demonstration at Barobari in Gazipur Sadar around 7:45am, said Mosharraf Hossain, assistant superintendent of police in Gazipur.
Later, they took to the street and vandalised windshields of some vehicles on the highway.
As law enforcers tried to bring the situation under control, the agitators hurled brick chips towards police triggering a chase and counter-chase.
Later, police fired several rounds of teargas shells and rubber bullets, Mosharraf said.
Later around 9:00am, the road communications became normal.
The RMG workers on Saturday observed a work abstention to press home their several demands including attendance bonus hike from Tk 400 Tk to Tk 600.
The authority kept the factory shut from Saturday afternoon to Sunday to discuss the matter with the managing director of the factory, said Md Selim Khan, sub-inspector of the Gazipur Industrial Police.
As the matter remained unresolved until this morning, the workers started agitation again, he added.
