Five get life for murder in Pabna
A Pabna court yesterday sentenced five people to life imprisonment for killing a man over land dispute at Gobindapur village in Santhia upazila of the district in 2003.
The convicts are Md Mozam Hossain, 50, Mahtab Uddin, 45, Aftab Uddin, 55, Altab alias Kalu, 60 and Ashraf Ali, 57 of the village .
According to the prosecution, the convicts killed Md Ibrahim Hossain of the village following an altercation over a disputed land on April 13, 2003.
Victim's brother Moinul Munshi filed a case with Santhia Police Station the same day, accusing the five. After a long investigation, police pressed charges against them in 2009.
As many as 13 witnesses gave their statements before the court during the trial.
After examining witnesses and evidence, Judge Amulla Kumar Sarkar of the Special Judge's Court found them guilty and pronounced the verdict at noon, court sources said.
Meanwhile, a man was killed in a clash over land dispute at Batiarpara village in Shahjadpur upazila on Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Yeasin Ali, 65, of the village.
Police said there had been a longstanding dispute between two groups of people -- one led by Sarwar and Jaker Ali and the other by Ruhul Amin -- over taking out the lease on the khas pond.
