FF Matlib's killer to die in Sylhet
One person has been sentenced to death and four others given life term for killing a person in Kanaighat for appearing in court as witness in an arms case.The Additional District and Sessions on Tuesday sentenced Mainuddin, 55, of Daukergul village in Kanaighat to death for killing freedom fighter Abdul Matlib in 1995 by firing shots. Two others--Abdul Haque and Nur Hossain--were also injured.
Those given life term are Kalachan (absconding), Harun, Habibur Rahman and Manik Miah (absconding). The convicts have also been fined Tk 20,000 each. Six of the accused were acquitted. As the verdict was pronounced, Mainuddin became agitated and threw sandals at the dais. Police brought the situation under control immediately. Among the 13 accused, two died during trial. The killing incident had created resentment in the area. Abul Hossain, nephew of Abdul Matlib, filed a case with the Kanaighat thana on March 6, 1995. Police submitted charge sheet against the 13 on June 27, 1996. |
