Ensure better treatment for Tazreen fire victim: HC
The High Court yesterday asked the government to make arrangements for providing better treatment to a Tazreen factory fire victim, who is suffering from a cancerous brain tumour and needs huge medical expenses, within 72 hours at its own cost.
Sumaya Khatun sustained serious head injuries in a three-storey fall after the deadly fire at Tazreen Fashions Ltd, a garment factory, at Ashulia outside Dhaka broke out on November 24 last year, killing at least 111 people and injuring many others.
The director general of health services has to comply with the order, which the court passed after three writ petitioners prayed for such directives.
On April 28, three anthropologists--Naznin Akter Banu, Saydia Gulrukh Kamal and Mahmudul Hasan Sumon--filed a writ petition, seeking directives for the arrest of Tazreen's owner Md Delwar Hossain to ensure his trial for criminal liabilities.
Recently, they submitted a supplementary petition, saying the petitioners are paying for the treatment of Sumaiya at United Hospital in Dhaka, but their fund is very limited. In these circumstances, the government should take the custody of the victim, who needs radiotherapy five times a week costing Tk 35,000, they added.
After hearing the petition, the HC also asked the inspector general of police to submit the DNA test report of the 24 missing or unidentified workers of Tazreen by October 3.
The petitioners' counsel, Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, earlier supplied two separate lists to the HC--one containing 40 names of the fire victims, who were not compensated, and the other having 24 names of unidentified or missing workers.
Tazreen's owner Delwar appeared before the HC yesterday. He has to appear on October 3 too.
