Elections to 17 more Ups by May 31

Elections to 17 more Union Parishads (UP) will be held by the end of the current month and to another 13 UPs by July 15 this year.

This was informed at a meeting of the Election Commission (EC) held on Tuesday to review UP and pourasabha elections which took place between January 25 and March 16, EC sources said.

Chief Election Commissioner MA Sayeed presided the meeting at the Election Commission (EC).

The meeting was informed that elections to 4223 UPs were held between January 25 and March 16 this year.

It was further informed that election to 225 pourasabhas, out of 255 in the country, was held from February 23 to 25 in 1999. Election to 24 pourasabhas could not be held due to 'some problems,' sources said.

Election Commissioners Safiur Rahman, M Munsef Ali, AK Mohammad Ali, secretary to the Election Commission SM Zakaria and other senior officials of the commission attended the meeting.
