Reckless driving on highways kills 52 during holidays

At least 52 people were killed and over 122 injured in separate road accidents in and outside the capital during the three-day Eid holiday and yesterday.
Of the deceased, 10 people were killed in a head-on collision between two buses on Bogra-Rangpur highway in Boalia of Gaibandha on Saturday.
In the capital, four people died when they were run over by vehicles while trying to cross streets in Uttara, Rampura, Elephant Road and Mirpur.
In Gaibandha, two buses collided head-on at Boalia of the district leaving the 10 people, mostly women, dead.
Sub-Inspector Ashraf Hossain of Gaibandha Highway Police said around 4:30pm Saturday, a coach heading for Rangpur from Dhaka was trying to overtake a rickshaw at a curve when collided with an oncoming bus.
The coach then fell into a ditch.
Three people died on impact and 30 others were injured. Seven died on their way to hospital.
The driver and conductor of the coach fled the scene.
The accident suspended vehicular movement on the highway for two hours and triggered a traffic jam.
The dead were Shamsu Nahar Begum, 60, Shahana Akhter, 35, Salma Akhter, 32, Shahnaz Parveen, 50, Marium Bewya,70, Manti Begum, 50, Risha, 7, Sonali Begum, 45, Sabbir hossain, 12 and bus driver Dilip Proshad.
In Bogra, at least six people, including a mother and her daughter, were killed and 30 others injured when an out-of-control truck collided head-on with a bus at Banani intersection in Shajahanpur upazila around 3:00pm yesterday.
At least 21 injured were admitted to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College and Hospital and nine left the hospital taking first aid.
Of the injured was Habib Mohammad Halimuzzan, 47, a deputy secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration.
In Madaripur, seven people were killed and 60 others were injured in three road accidents during the Eid holidays and yesterday.
Two of them died and 60 were injured when a bus fell into a ditch near Shariatullah Bridge on Dhaka-Khulna highway on Friday afternoon.
Three people died as a bus hit the motorbike they were travelling on at Gabindapur area on Dhaka-Barisal highway in Madaripur on Saturday.
A man was killed after falling from the roof of a bus at Raijoir upazila on Dhaka-Barisal highway in Madaripur on Thursday night. On Friday, police recovered the body of an elderly person who apparently died in a road accident at Gabindapur area.
In Dinajpur five people were killed.
Three women died and 50 others were injured when a bus blew one of its tyres and collided head on with another bus at Birganj upazila around 2:30pm yesterday.
A lecturer of Bondhomata School and College of Phulbari upazila in Dinajpur was killed when his motorbike collided with another motorbike in Phulbaria yesterday and another person died in Gopalganj area of the district after being hit by a cycle Friday night.
In Jhenidah, two people were killed at Charmuraridah near Jhenidah Cadet College on Jhenidah-Kushtia highway after a truck hit a broken down truck on Thursday morning.
In Narail, an elderly man died when he was run over by a motorbike in Chowgachha of Lohagara around 3:30pm yesterday.
In Comilla, eight people were killed and several others were injured in five road accidents at Daudkandi and Laksam upazila during the Eid holidays and yesterday.
In Brahmanbaria, a woman was killed on Eid day, Friday, when the CNG run auto-rickshaw carrying her fell into a roadside ditch at Pahartali of Bancharampur.
In Manikganj, two people were killed and 10 others injured in two road accidents at Tepra bus stand and at Borongali bus stand in Shivalaya upazila of Manikganj on Saturday. A bus fell into a ditch near Tepra bus stand killing one and injuring 10 people while a man died when his motorbike was hit by a bus.
In Gopalganj, two people died when a microbus broke through the guardrails of a bridge at Gharakhola on Khulna-Dhaka highway Saturday morning and landed in a ditch.
In Lalmonirhat, a bus hit a battery-run three-wheeler on Lalmonirhat-Kurigram highway at Khedabagh on Saturday killing one person.
In Jamalpur, two pedestrians were killed when a bus ran them over on Tangail-Jamalpur highway at Raghunathpurdigholi in Jamalpur Sunday afternoon.
In Chittagong, a woman was killed and seven others were injured as a sports utility vehicle plunged into a ditch near Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway around 4:00pm yesterday.
At least three people are missing since Thursday when they fell into the Jamuna river from the roof a bus on Bangabandhu Bridge. One person was rescued.
