The country may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall today as strong monsoon wind has become active in the northern Bay, the Met office said yesterday.
The Met office warned that heavy rainfall might cause landslides at hilly areas in Chittagong division.
All the maritime port offices were also asked to hoist cautionary signal number three.
“Though the monsoon wind arrived in the country on June 8, delaying a week, it was not active until now,” said Samarendra Karmakar, former director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Heavy downpours have already disrupted normal life in the capital as some 85mm rainwater has been recorded in the capital in last 24 hours from Friday night.
Working people including office-goers suffered a lot due to heavy rainfall as public buses were very thin on the city streets on the government holiday.
The capital witnessed waterlogging at different parts including Manik Mia avenue, Mirpur, Kazipara, Shewrapara, Kalyanpur, Mohammadpur, Town Hall, Asad Gate, Karwan Bazar, Moghbazar, Malibagh, Mouchak, Gulshan, Banani, Nayapaltan, Kakrail, Rayerbagh and Sanir Akhara.
The monsoon wind is unusual this year, Indian media reports citing experts, as the northern part of the neighbouring country experienced a cloudburst, causing heavy floods in the Himalayas in mid-June.
People wade through flood water in Banglabazar area of Cox's Bazar sadar upazila yesterday. About 200 villages throughout eight upazilas of the district were inundated due to heavy downpour for the last three days and water rolling down from hills.
