Downpour drenches Dhaka

Incessant downpour has submerged many parts of the capital in ankle-deep water, wreaking havoc on the city life on Sunday.
A total of 122 millimetres of rainfall was recorded in the 24 hours till 6:00am Sunday, a forecast officer of Bangladesh Meteorological Department told The Daily Star over telephone.
The highest rainfall was recorded in Teknaf at 214mm, he said.
The downpour that began on Friday due to active monsoon in the Bay may continue for the next two days, the meteorologist predicts.
The Met office has asked three maritime ports of the country to hoist local cautionary signal No. three.
Commuters from low-lying areas in the capital have been severely affected by the water logging as the rain submerged the streets and alleyways.
Office-goers endured stagnant water in the busy morning as heavy downpour flooded many thoroughfares including Kakrail, Bijoy Sarani, Mouchak, Shantinagar, Malibagh, Dhanmondi-27, Asad Gate, Mohammadpur and in many other parts of the capital.
Commuters have to wait long in the queue for public transports, while many rickshaw pullers and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers are charging double or triple fare from the passengers adding much to their sufferings.
Open manholes or potholes in the middle of the streets also increased the sufferings as vehicles and pedestrians stumbled on them and fell in water in many areas.
Meanwhile, other parts of the country are also experiencing heavy rains since Saturday.
In Chittagong, a woman and her daughter were killed in a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall early Sunday.
MET OFFICE FORECAST
According to a 24-hour weather forecast commencing 9:00am Sunday, the well marked low over Gangetic Pashchimbanga and adjoining area moved northwestwards, weakened and merged with monsoon axis.
The axis of monsoon trough runs through Rajsthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Gangetic Pashchimbanga and thence northeastwards to Assam across central part of Bangladesh, the forecast said. One of its associated troughs extends to north Bay, it said.
Monsoon is active over Bangladesh and strong over North Bay.
Moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong & Sylhet divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country.
Maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bzar and Mongla have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No. three.
All fishing boats and trawlers over north Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
