Different parties hail HC verdict, BNP mum
Different political parties on Thursday welcomed a verdict declaring illegal Jamaat-e-Islami's registration with the Election Commission while the main opposition BNP remained mum over the issue.
Talking to The Daily Star, BNP's two standing committee members wishing not to be named expressed their inability to make any comment in this regard.
They said BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is supposed to give reaction to the verdict.
While the leaders of Awami League, Workers Party of Bangladesh and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal expressed their satisfaction over the verdict and said they hope the Election Commission now would take proper measures to cancel its registration.
“Through the High Court verdict, it has once again been proved that Jamaat is a terrorist organisation. If they try to create anarchy, actions will be taken to tackle them,” AL presidium member Kazi Zafrullah said.
He said Jamaat should have been banned long ago. He however said they would have to wait till final judgment from the Appellate Division.
Another AL presidium member Nooh-Ul-Alam Lenin said it has once again been proved that Jamaat is a fascist organisation. "Although the party opposed independence of the country, it did not repent for its misdeeds in the last 42 years.”
AL Joint Secretary General Mahbubul Alam Hanif said, "We hope the Election Commission will take necessary measures to registration of Jamaat."
Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon said, "We waited for a long time for this verdict."
He added because Jamaat was against the country’s independence, it did not abide by the law of the lands. "It must be banned.”
“People's expectations have been fulfilled through the verdict. But the spirit of our liberation war will not be fulfilled till the final judgment,” Sharif Nurul Ambia, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal general secretary, said.
