Dhawan has itchy feet
Shikar Dhawan might have had a dream Test debut -- scoring a swashbuckling ton against Australia -- but in the very match he fractured his finger while fielding. It forced him to not only miss the last Test against the Aussies but has also kept him away from the first few weeks of the ongoing Pepsi Indian Premier League.
While he is still to join his teammates -- in the Sunrisers Hyderabad -- Dhawan isn't one to repent over the timing of the injury. Speaking to Mail Today, Dhawan said injuries are a part and parcel of any sportsman's life. But he was quick to ascertain that he couldn't wait to be a part of the carnival.
"Firstly, I must say that I am itching to get back on to the field. I wouldn't crib over the timing of the injury as it is a part and parcel of an athlete's life. You can't really plan the timing of the injury. It will still take a while -- maybe another week -- before I can get back on to the field."
"I had a really good IPL V, so I would wish to carry on from where I had left last season. I feel that while we are a new team, the nucleus of the side is very much the same to the one that represented Deccan Chargers last season. While I haven't had a really long time with the outfit as I have been spending quite some time in Australia, I did spend some time with our coach Tom Moody and some of the other members of the coaching staff and I feel that we have a perfect unit," he said.
While he did notch up 569 runs in the last edition for Deccan, the highest for the outfit, it is no surprise that post his murderous knock in his debut Test, the level of expectation will be higher. But Dhawan feels that his role as a player in the new Hyderabad outfit will be no different.
"Yes, I do realise that people want me to take every opposition attack to the cleaners, but honestly that is what I have always looked to do whenever I have taken the crease in the IPL. I have looked to score fast and big and help my team win. My only motive has been to ensure that I put my team in a position of strength, and it won't be any different this time either," he said.
Players have often said that switching formats don't come easy and it does take some time.
But Dhawan says that his game is suited to the slam-bang format and it won't be too much of a concern.
"Yeah, it does take slight changes in approach when you are switching formats. But I feel that my game is suited to the T20 format and I have always looked to be aggressive and dominate the bowlers. So it shouldn't be too much of an issue for me. Maybe, I will bring out the chip shot over the infield and a couple of more such improvised shots out of my kitty for the IPL, but other than that, I will stick to my basics," he said.
Having spent quality time with his family in Australia, Sunrisers Hyderabad would hope that he will be back with the outfit soon as the team does need his firepower at the top of the order.
