Couple get life for kidnapping child for ransom in Tangail
A court here yesterday sentenced a couple to life imprisonment for kidnapping a child from Mirzapur upazila of the district for ransom in 2011.
The convicts are Abdul Matin, 60, and his wife Moriom Begum, 50, of Sirajganj district. Judge Abdul Mazid of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Court delivered the verdict.
According to the prosecution, Abdul Matin, a carpenter, and his wife Moriom Begum, a garment worker, were living in a rented house at Gorai in Mirzapur upazila.
They kidnapped Nayon, one and a half years old son of house owner Ali Ahmad, on January 4, 2011 and phoned him, demanding Tk 10 lakh for release of his son. Matin filed a case with Mirzapur Police Station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on the day
Later, it was settled on Tk one lakh and Matin asked Ali Ahmad to throw away the ransom money from a running train at Elenga in Kalihati upazila on January 6.
Being informed by Ali Ahmed, police took position in the area and arrested the kidnapper, Matin, while he was collecting the money thrown out of a train by Ali Ahmed in Elenga area.
Following Matin's confession, police rescued abducted child Nayon from a house at Mosinda village in Kalihati upazila the same day and arrested Matin's wife Moriom Begum from there.
