A schoolgirl was stabbed by her stalker yesterday allegedly over her refusal to accept his love proposal in Kalapara upazila of the district.
Local people rescued critically injured Tuli Akhter, 15, a Class IX student at Dhulashar High School, and took her to Kalapara Upazila Health Complex first, from where she was referred to Barisal-Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
Quoting locals and victim's family members, police said Nayeem, 18, son of Solaiman of Dhulashar village, had been proposing the girl on way to and from her school for long.
As the girl kept refusing his repeated proposals, enraged Nayeem, a local vagabond, waylaid Tuli on her way to school around 9:30am and stabbed her on the abdomen, leaving her bleeding profusely, police said.
Hearing screams, local people rescued the victim and admitted her to the hospital. They also caught Nayeem while he was trying to flee from the spot and handed him over to Mohipur Police Station.
Headmaster of Dhulashar High School Mohammad Ibrahim said Nayeem had been stalking the girl for long.
Earlier, arbitration was held on several occasion where the culprit was asked not to harass the girl anymore but he did not stop doing so, the headmaster said.
Officer-in-Charge of Mohipur Police Station Mizanur Rahman said they will take lawful step after filing of a case in this regard.
