PUST students boycott classes for cancellation of year drop system
Students of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) yesterday started boycotting classes, locking the main gate of the campus demanding cancellation of year drop system in the university.
The authorities, however, claimed year drop system has been implemented to keep quality in education.
Earlier on July 17, PUST students went for agitation against dropout system. Afterwards, the university authority formed a committee to revise the dropout system. The committee has recently submitted the report that sparked agitation.
Although the authorities earlier agreed to be soft on the students, there has been no decision to remove year drop system. So they got angry again, the agitating students said.
Dropout ruins academic career of many students. They have demanded removal of dropout system but the authority has imposed new rules on the students, they said.
Angry students locked the main gate of the university and confined the VC, teachers and the staff to the PUST administration building to fulfill their demand yesterday noon. Classes and examinations were halted on the campus due to the agitation.
Dr Pritom Kumar, proctor of the university, said the year drop system allows keeping the quality in results.
Year drop is a regular process in university to maintain the quality in result. They have fixed minimum GPA-2 point to avoid year drop and the committee has already recommended reducing extra fee of year drop students but the students do not realize the matter and have gone for agitation, said the proctor.
