Poles installed on villagers' land
Dinajpur Palli Bidyut Samity-2 (PBS-2) in Nawabganj upazila have set up 13 poles on the lands of villagers to extend power connection to an irrigation pump, which is yet to get operational licence from the department concerned.
Residents of Akhra village in the upazila said PBS-2 started installing the poles from Bhagalpur village in April.
Rashidul Haque of the village said he lodged a complaint with PBS-2 office in Birampur upazila on April 23, urging the authorities to stop installation of poles on his land, but they did not take any action.
PBS-2 did not need to install 13 poles when power connection from Akhra village to the irrigation pump is possible by installing a single pole, villagers said. The installation of poles is illegal and the cost will be borne by the party getting the power connection, they added.
Installation of each pole costs Tk 30,000.
PBS-2 General Manager (GM) Susanta Kumar said the voltage from Akhra village will not be enough to operate the pump. They installed 13 poles to extend stable power line from Bhagalpur village, he said.
The GM said they are just installing the poles and final connection will be established when the operator obtains the licence.
Md Shamim, brother of the owner of the pump Shahinul Islam, said they applied for a licence to the Department of Agriculture Extension, which is expected to be issued in November.
