MP protests attack with sit-in in Nilphamari
A ruling party lawmaker of Nilphamari sat-in as a show of protest over alleged attack by fellow party-men during yesterday’s observation of national mourning day.
Thousands joined Nilphamari-3 MP Golam Mostofa and blocked the Nilphamari-Jaldhaka road, demanding arrest of the attackers, our local correspondent reports.
Golam Mostofa was attending a programmeof SammilitaSangskritikJoteat zero point when the incident took place around 8:45pm, said Abdul Gaffar, an organizer.
Ex-upazila unit chief of Jubo League Abdul Wahed Bahadur and his followers started hue and cry and hurled abusive words to the lawmaker, Gaffar added. The MP was attacked at the spot, but the attackers fled before anyone could get to them.
The lawmaker, accompanied by thousands blocked the Nilphamari-Jaldhaka road at zero point at 9:00pm demanding arrest of Bahadur, said Abdul Mannan, ex-president of Jaldhaka upazila unit Awami League.
At the sit-in, MP Mostafa alleged that “Bahadur is a miscreant” and that he was attacked because of not entertaining his vested interests. He also alleged that he filed several diaries with the local police against Bahadur.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Uttam Kumar and Assistant Superintendent of Police of NilphamariRuhul Amin visited the spot and requested the agitating people to withdraw.
However, it was not before Awami League central Joint Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak called and assured steps that the blockaders and the lawmaker withdrew after midnight.
