UP member turns road into agri land
A member of Chakamoiya Union Parishad (UP) under Kalapara upazila has turned a government-owned earthen village road into his agricultural land in Betmore village.
Local people have been using the village road beside the Kachupatra canal for years.
Md Helal Uddin, a local resident, submitted a written complaint to Kalapara Upazila Nirbahi Office (UNO) over the matter on Monday.
In the complaint, Helal alleged that local UP member Abul Kalam engaged at least four labourers to turn the village road into his agricultural land and they started the work on Sunday. They have already cut around 200 feet, out of the around 500-foot-long road.
After getting the complaint, the UNO asked the Assistant Commissioner (AC land) AFM Abu Sufian to take action after visiting the spot and seeing the situation.
Sufian said he visited the area on Monday afternoon and stopped digging of the road.
He asked the perpetrators to repair the road immediately and bring it to its original condition, he said.
A labourer named Bacchu Mia was detained from the spot, he added.
Abul Kalam could not be contacted despite several attempts as his phone was switched off.
