Girl saves herself from child marriage
A schoolgirl saved herself from child marriage as she took shelter at her institution in Panchagarh Sadar upazila and sought help from the local administration through her fellows yesterday.
The girl Maria Akhter, 16, daughter of Nurul Islam of Rajnagar in Panchagrh municipality, is a Class-X student of Panchagarh Government Technical School and College.
“The girl came to the institution in the afternoon when other students were returning home after observing the programmes of National Mourning Day,” Rabiul Islam, officer in charge (OC) of Panchagarh Police Station, told this correspondent over cell phone.
The girl told her fellows that her father decided to marry her off to Roni Islam, 19, son of Anwar Hossain of their village, but she does not want to marry now for the sake of continuing her education.
As her fellow students informed local Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ehtesam Reza over cell phone of the matter, the latter instantly asked the OC to take necessary steps to stop the child marriage.
The OC sent a police team to Maria's house and took an undertaking from her father Nurul Islam that he would not arrange his daughter's marriage until she reaches the legal age according to the law of the land.
