Condition of 2 journalists critical
The two journalists critically injured in the brazen BCL attack on Kuakata Press Club on Sunday evening were shifted to the Patuakhali General Hospital yesterday for better treatment.
The seriously wounded Kuakata Press Club president Ruman Imtiaz Tushar and the club office secretary Hossain Amir were first admitted to the Kuakata Hospital. They were taken to the better facility as their conditions remained critical.
A group of local journalists met with ABM Mosharef Hossain, BNP president of the Kalapara upazila and vice president of the district unit, at a tea party at the press club on Sunday, when they were attacked by a Bangladesh Chhatra League group.
The BCL gang not only critically injured the journalists during the attack, but ransacked at least 20 motorbikes and some business establishments. Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal men later chased the BCL men and fresh clashes took place between the two groups.
Meanwhile, goons threw brickbats at Mosharef's house around 11:00pm on Sunday. Police rushed to the scene to bring the situation under control.
“Although police were able to foil an attack in the morning [Monday], most businesses in Kuakata still remained closed for fear of further attacks,” Kalapara Police Station Officer-in-charge KM Tariqul Islam told The Daily Star.
