Complainant assaults accused in court premises in Sirajganj

SIRAJGANJ, Jan 25: A complainant, who is also an advocate, physically assaulted the accused in a case in court premises here on Sunday.

People present there, however, caught the complainant, Advocate Rafiqul Islam, and handed him over to police.

Witnesses said the accused, Salma Begum, 35, came to attend the case in Sirajganj from Bogra. Advocate Shafiqul Islam appointed by a human rights organisation accompanied Salma, wife of rickshaw puller Mojnu of Fulbari under Bogra district.

In 1996 Salma Begum filed a case with a court in Bogra against Rafiqul Islam accusing him of violating her daughter Sohagi. Rafiq, who hails from village Kuralia under Sadar thana of Sirajganj district, was working with a private insurance company in Bogra. Salma used to work as a maid in Rafiqul's residence.

Rafiqul was arrested by Bogra police and later obtained bail from court.

After getting bail from court Rafiqul filed a 'false' case only to harass me, said Salma. He is also creating pressure on me to withdraw the rape case, she added.

A case was filed against Rafiqul for Sunday's incident in court premises.
