Neither had valid documents
The vehicles that caused an accident in Gaibandha on Friday night have no relevant documents, said police yesterday.
A bus plunged into a ditch beside Gaibandha-Palashbari road after it hitting a tractor in Mahdipur area, killing five people -- including three members of a family -- and injuring 10 others.
The drivers of both the vehicles fled the scene.
The bus, “Ahsan special”, has no fitness certificate or permit for Dhaka-Kurigram route as mentioned on its body, Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Palashbari Police Station, told The Daily Star.
About the tractor, he said it is also not registered.
Of the injured, five were admitted to Palashbari Upazila Health Complex and the rest were given first aid.
Shahjahan Mia, one of the injured, said, “Amid rain the bus was in high speed. Suddenly, I heard a bang. Then the bus fell into the ditch.”
“Later, I found myself in the hospital,” said the 50-year-old who is from Shahbajpur village in Sadullapur upazila.
“The driver was driving the bus recklessly and could not control it after hitting the tractor,” said another injured passenger Abdul Hai, 50, from Kurigram.
The OC said investigation is going on.
The victim family members -- Emdadul Islam, 25, his wife Kakoli Khatun, 20, and their daughter Hena Khatun, 5 -- were from Ghagoa village in Sundarganj upazila.
Another deceased Afroza Khatun, 30, was from Chachia Mirganj village in the upazila. The other deceased is still unidentified, said police.
