Former Mirakkel contestant beaten up by CU BCL
A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists from Chittagong University (CU) beat up a former contestant of “Mirakkel Akkel Challenger”, a popular comedy show on Indian TV channel Zee Bangla, yesterday on the CU campus for allegedly posting a derogatory status on Facebook.
Yakub Rasel, who is a former student of CU Communication and Journalism Department and lives on the campus with his family [his father is a CU staff member], was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) after the incident.
Witnesses and police sources said a group of 15 to 20 BCL men swooped on him in Zero Point area of the campus at around 3:00pm.
Rasel's friend Asad, who was with him during the attack, said the men approached them and took Rasel to a nearby tea stall while the duo was waiting for Demu train to come to the city.
“Are you Yakub Rasel? they asked. When I replied in the affirmative, they started hitting me indiscriminately with belts,” Rasel said, adding that the BCL men left quickly after giving him a good beating.
Asad rescued him and took him to CU Medical Centre. Later, he was referred to CMCH.
Former Vice President of BCL's CU unit Mansur Ahmed said Rasel posted derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook. “We won't spare anyone who posts anything derogatory about our PM,” he added.
CU Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhury said they are looking into the matter.
