First death anniversary of 'Tree Samad'
Today is the first death anniversary of Abdus Samad Sheikh, known as “Tree Samad”.
Since he was 12, the man from Faridpur Sadar upazila's Vajondanga village made it his duty to plant at least one tree a day, often buying it with the little money he earned by pulling rickshaw.
He died at Faridpur Medical College Hospital after being diagnosed with a tumour in his liver. He was 60.
The Daily Star on the occasion of its 26th founding anniversary on February 22, 2017 honoured this nature lover at International Convention City Bashundhara.
“You all should plant trees,” he said after receiving the award. Before the programme began, he complained: “I could not plant a tree today because of this programme.”
A coconut tree was brought for Samad, who then planted it by the hall room of the venue.
On the occasion of his first death anniversary, a doa mahfil will be held at Vagondanga Colonypara Mosque.
