Elegy for the editors
Veteran journalists Golam Sarwar and Moazzem Hossain, were icons of journalism and future generations can enrich their journalism by following them, said veteran journalists of different print and electronic media houses yesterday.
Addressing a condolence meeting organised by Jatiya Press Club at its VIP lounge, they urged the journalist community to remember them following their works.
Golam Sarwar, editor of The Daily Samakal, died at a hospital in Singapore on August 13 and AHM Moazzem Hossain, editor and publisher of The Financial Express, died at a city hospital on August 1.
“Both Sarwar and Moazzem have given us instructions through their work; if we can keep up it, journalism will be more enriched,” said Riazuddin Ahmed, editor of the daily News Today.
Terming both the editors uncompromising in professional life, Khandakar Moniruzzaman, acting editor of the daily Sangbad, said they never made any compromises in terms of professionalism, and set examples for the next generation of journalists.
“Editorial institutions are going to be destroyed; editors are becoming chief executives while journalists are becoming employees. This needs to change. We have to bring back editorial and journalism. If we can do that, it will be honouring them,” said veteran journalist Abed Khan.
Prime Minister's Media Adviser Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said Moazzem Hossain and Golam Sarwar will be remembered through their ethics, ideals, courage and uncompromising attitude in their profession.
General Secretary of Jatiya Press Club Farida Yesmin said not only have they lost two icons of journalism, but their demise is an irreparable loss to the whole journalism sector.
Publisher of Samakal AK Azad said depth of knowledge of Moazzem was praiseworthy, and Sarwar was uncompromising to his profession.
Terming Moazzem a soft-spoken, Ekushey Television CEO Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul said Bangladesh is now a country of loud voices, but there are a very few persons in the country who can be like him in professional life.
About Sarwar, Bulbul said there is nobody left in his life from who he can take advice directly on journalism.
Saiful Alam, senior vice president of Jatiya Press Club, termed both of them brave soldiers of their times.
President of Jatiya Press Club Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman presided over the programme, while editor of Bhorer Kagoj Shyamal Dutta moderated the programme.
Among others, Mustafiz Shafi, acting editor of Samakal; Fahim Hossain, son of Moazzem Hossain; and Golam Shahriar Ranzan, son of Golam Sarwar, also spoke at the programme.
