18-member committee to monitor traffic situation across country

An 18-member committee has been formed to monitor the implementation of all activities related to improvement of traffic rules and ensuring of road safety across the country.

A notice was issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) yesterday in this regard.

The PMO secretary and director general (administration) were made president and member secretary of the committee.

The committee will monitor implementation of traffic law on highways following instructions of the prime minister, implement different projects of different organisations for traffic management and road safety, and inspect short-term and long-term work plans of different organisations and their execution. It would also coordinate activities of voluntary organisations like Scouts, Girls Guide and Red Crescent Society, and monitor and decide other issues over the traffic management and road safety.

The move came after countrywide student protests earlier this month, following an accident involving two buses in race that killed two college students in Dhaka city's Kurmitola area on July 29.
