Beaten by Savar BCL Leader

Challenged youth dies after 2 days

Shamim Shamim

Physically challenged Shamim, 22, died yesterday from the two-day old injuries inflicted on him by Savar unit Bangladesh Chhatra League convenor Jahidul Islam Faisal and BCL worker Johnny.
The hunchbacked victim passed away in the intensive care unit of Savar's Enam Medical College and Hospital around 6:00am, a director of the hospital Zahidur Rahman told The Daily Star.
Talking about the injuries, Dr Nadim Hossain said, “Shamim was beaten severely causing him to bleed excessively and for it to clot inside some parts of his body.”
Shamim's father Jahangir Alam, a construction worker who lives in the Sabujbagh area in Savar, said a complaint was filed with the Savar police on Thursday.
He said Faisal and Shamim got into an argument over charging their mobile phones at a shop at the Savar Bazar bus stand on Thursday afternoon.
“Shamim protested when Faisal broke queue and started recharging his phone out of turn. Angered by the confrontation, Faisal beat Shamim with iron rods and sticks,” read the case statement.
Savar Model Police Station Officer-in-charge (investigation) Aminur Rahman said that the duo had fled and were on the run.
The victim's family, however, alleged that they were not arrested due to political sheltering.
Asked what steps were taken against Faisal, Savar Awami League general secretary Ali Hayder said he had heard that Faisal might be expelled from BCL.
