Pay Eid bonus by Aug 16
The government has asked factory owners to pay the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha's festival bonus to workers by August 16 and the salary for the days they worked in the current month by August 19.
Md Mujibul Haque, state minister for labour and employment, gave out the instruction at the 37th crisis management committee meeting in the secretariat yesterday. The tentative date for Eid-ul-Azha is August 22, for it depends on the sighting of the moon.
Haque also asked members of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) not to force workers to work on the Eid day.
Many garment factory owners do so to meet production and shipment deadlines.
With the announcement of Eid holidays, most of the 4.4 million garment workers will go to their village homes to celebrate the occasion with their near and dear ones.
Representatives from ministries and departments and the BGMEA and the BKMEA were present.
The committee usually holds meetings with stakeholders ahead of Eid vacations to settle payment issues to avoid untoward incidents.
