BNP favourites elected in most wards
Besides securing all the four mayoral offices, the BNP-backed candidates have outperformed their Awami League-supported rivals vying for the posts of councillors.
Of the 157 councillor posts in the four city corporations, BNP-backed candidates won 93 and the ruling Awami League favourites got 41.
Candidates favoured by the Jamaat-e-Islami, a key ally of the BNP, won in eight wards while independent candidates triumphed in 14 wards, according to official results.
The result of one ward in Sylhet City Corporation has been withheld as two candidates got equal votes.
In the most talked-about battle of ballots since the 2008 national polls, the BNP-backed mayoral candidates won in the four cities by clear margins ranging from 17,000 to 60,000 votes.
The opposition alliance-backed councillor candidates have shown their strength both in general and reserved seats in all the cities.
In Sylhet, BNP favourites won 16 councillor posts while AL men secured eight. Jamaat candidates bagged the remaining three. Of the 10 reserved seats for women, BNP-backed aspirants won six against three won by their AL-backed rivals.
In Barisal, the opposition-backed councillor contenders won in 18 wards while AL favourites won in eight. Of the other two posts, one went to a Jamaat candidate and the other to an independent contender.
