Hartal in 3 districts Wednesday
The opposition will enforce a daylong hartal in Chapainawabganj, Comilla and Chandpur tomorrow.
BNP called the shutdown in Chapainawabganj to protest the death of a youth yesterday claiming him as of its activist and in Comilla demanding trace of its two missing local leaders.
In Chandpur, the BNP-led 18-party alliance called the hartal protesting today's deaths of its two activists during the opposition's fourth day blockade.
Two BNP activists were killed and at least five hit by bullets as police opened fire at them, who hurled a crude bomb targeting the law enforcers at Kalibari in the town this morning.
COMILLA
Main opposition BNP called a dawn-to-dusk hartal in nine upazilas of the district for Wednesday to press home their demand for trace of its two missing local leaders and release of all leaders across the country.
The daylong hartal will start at 6:00am and continue till 6:00pm in Laksam, Langolkut, Monoharganj, Chouddagram, Comilla Sadar, Sadar Dakkhin, Brahmanpara, Burichang and Barura upazilas, Mustak Ahmed, organising secretary of Comilla district BNP, said in a press release.
The party claimed that Saiful Islam, a member of the district BNP unit and also a former lawmaker of BNP, and Humayun Kabir, president of Laksam municipality BNP unit, remained missing since November 27.
Family members of Islam and Kabir claimed that Rapid Action Battalion picked up the two at Laksam upazila headquarters when they were travelling for Dhaka on the night of November 27.
Rejecting detention of Islam and Kabir, Rab-11 Commander Major Masud Rana told The Daily Star that they picked up 10 opposition men on the spot but the duo was not among them.
CHANDPUR
SM Kamaluddin, joint convener of BNP-led 18-party alliance, announced the dawn-to-dusk hartal for tomorrow protesting the death of two BNP activists today.
The activists were killed and at least five others were bullet-hit when police opened fire on the blockaders as they hurled a handmade bomb on the law enforcers at Kalibari of the town in the morning.
CHAPAINAWABGANJ
Local BNP has called a dawn-to-dusk hartal (shutdown) in Chapainawabganj for tomorrow in protest against the death of a youth, who was killed in a blast during a clash at the house of Kansat movement leader Golam Rabbani.
The deceased, Rubel, 25, lived just opposite to the house of Rabbani, the Awami League candidate for the 10th general election from Chapainawabganj-1 constituency.
Claiming Rubel as a BNP activist, Shajahan Mia, BNP president of district unit also the district unit convener of 18-party opposition alliance, announced the hartal at a press conference today.
The clash ensued when Awami League men resisted an attack orchestrated by the opposition activists on the residence of Rabbani.
Rubel got injured in a blast as he came out to see what was going on, locals say.
Doctors declared him dead after he was rushed to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex.
Several splinters hit him in the chest, said Rabiul Islam, medical officer of the health complex.
